Pet food can be confusing and often misleading. With so many options available, it can be difficult to understand exactly what's in your pet's food.
To help, we have listed some common ingredients that can indicate a product may not be as healthy as it seems.
Corn, Soy and Wheat... if listed as a primary ingredient they are likely being used as fillers or meat substitutes. Depending on the product, these are often highly processed and can be unhealthy additions to your pet's diet.
Sweeteners... designed to increase palatability, sweeteners are generally used to mask ingredients. They are both addictive and unnecessary.
Preservatives... shelf life is important however, in general, the longer the shelf life the less natural the product.
Chemicals... as a rule of thumb if it doesn't sound like food it most likely is not (eg BHT ethoxyquin, propylene glycol etc).
Non Specific Animal Products... terms such as animal fat, meat and meat by-products are methods used to disguise animal parts (think organs, bones, skin etc) as a 'meat'.
Remember your pet hasn't a say in what they eat. As a general rule, fresh and natural are always best. Being aware of what is on the back of the pack will help ensure your pet is receiving the nutrition it needs to live a happy and healthy life!
